DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRY  

Description:   

Part time position to oversee and nurture the music ministry of First Presbyterian Church, ensuring that the cultural richness and breadth of the congregation is represented musically, and that the congregation experiences the depth of the heritage of the Reformed Tradition.   

Responsibilities:   

  • Plan and coordinate the music program with the Pastor, Organist, and the Worship Ministry Team   
  • Serve as a connector for the various cultural resources of the congregation  
  • Plan music for and direct the Chancel Choir at the 10:50 a.m. Sunday worship service and other special services throughout the year   
  • Plan music for and direct the Children’s Choir and Youth Choir so they are performing regularly 
  • Recruit new choir members   
  • Participate in Sunday worship services and at special events   
  • Maintain the church music library   
  • Provide consultation and coordination for other music ministry staff and volunteers, such as the African and South Asian Choirs, instrumental ensembles, children and youth music programs, Ruah Praise Band, and other music-related groups 
  • Maintain and curate the musical instruments of the church which include an electronic sanctuary organ, a sanctuary grand piano, a three octave set of handbells, and assorted Orff instruments. 
  • Attend monthly Worship and Christian Education Ministry Team meetings 

Required qualifications:    

  • BA Music preferred, or equivalent work experience in a related field  
  • Experience leading a Choir in traditional church music and other music styles  
  • Experience leading children and youth music programs  
  • Experience in teaching music via written and oral traditions   

Preferred qualifications:    

  • Experience in playing guitar or keyboard     
  • In Depth Knowledge of Reformed music and worship traditions 
  • Experience with sound boards and other technologies that assist in worship 

Other Job Details:  

  • The Director of Music Ministry is supervised by the Pastor as Head of Staff and is accountable to the Session.   
  • Average hours: 15 hours per week   
  • Status: Part-time  
  • Time off: Two weeks vacation and one week of study leave 
  • Annual Salary: $18K – $24K
